Foetuses were removed on days 14 to 21 of pregnancy from rats given a stock diet free from
ascorbic acid. Foetal liver was able to synthesize ascorbic acid from day 15 of gestation but
foetal kidney was inactive throughout. Foetal liver or kidney of guineapigs possessed no
ability to synthesize ascorbic acid.
Abstract
